In the Self-portrait (Valentin) series, the artist questions the representation of identity through a mise en scène that vertiginously accumulates multiple identities, mise en abyme, and temporalities into a single dance. He uses his black oil paint glazes, always applied by hand directly onto the canvas, as the trace of a dance performed with the image of a dancer friend, who, once the photo session was over and the image printed, was already absent. Despite the double visual representation of the dancer (the image of his body and that of the cast of his head), the artist considers the work a self-portrait, where his unique physical imprint takes precedence.

 

Dans la série Self-portrait (Valentin), l’artiste interroge la représentation de l’identité à travers une mise en scène qui accumule, de manière vertigineuse, plusieurs identités, mises en abyme et temporalités en une seule danse. Il utilise ses glacis de peinture à l’huile noire, toujours appliqués à la main directement sur la toile, comme la trace d’une danse réalisée avec l’image d’un ami danseur, qui, une fois la séance photo terminée et l’image imprimée, était déjà absent. Malgré la double représentation visuelle du danseur (l’image de son corps et celle du moulage de sa tête), l’artiste considère l’œuvre comme un autoportrait, où son empreinte physique unique prime.
